A Break From the Heat

The temperature has been so hot this past week...over 100 for many days. Yesterday we had a very nice break with temperatures in the low 80s, rain, and cloud cover all day. It was beautiful. Darrell decided to take a break from studying so we could enjoy this rare weather out of doors. About 30 minutes from our house we found this beautiful spot last year and returned yesterday. It's on the north side of Lake Pleasant and you can only get to it by walking, biking, or four wheeling, so it is very secluded and quiet.

This picture of me is not great, but I just wanted to show the nice seat I enjoyed while the kids played. Emily is filling bullet casings with sand. Darrell found them on the ground and she played with them forever. It's funny what amuses kids.

This is Derek "fishing." There were lots of really long branches that he enjoyed playing with. He also found a bungee chord and amused himself with climbing trees.

This face on Emily was just so hilarious, I had to post the picture.

The day was beautiful and sitting by the water the temp was probably in the mid 70s. It was gorgeous! It was slightly breezy and anytime I was about to say it was a little chilly, I remembered that I had been sweating to death for days and remembered to be grateful for the short respite.

Darrell braided some vines together and these pictures are of the kids modeling a crown made from them.

I was tired later that evening from all the walking, but it was so worth it. We were so relaxed, the kids enjoyed it and it felt like we had left the city behind...something Darrell desperately wants to do permanently:)

Emily usually naps before noon, but we did not leave until almost 2pm from the water. On the walk out she was soooo tired and was falling asleep riding on dad's shoulders. She was completely out when we got to the car, and slept most of the way home. Even Derek, who does not nap anymore, took a nap on the way home. I shut my eyes for a while when I could no longer keep them open, and Darrell took a nap when we got home. It was a great day!

Not Worth It...

Have you ever wondered why good spathetti saunce is 3-5 dollars a jar? Well I now know why...
You start with 6 1/2 pounds of tomatoes. Wash, core, quarter and then simmer for 20 minutes. Then you smush out all the juice, leaving the seeds and skin.
Than you boil and boil and boil and boil and boil and boil and boil...(you get the point) FOREVER. At that point you get a measly 3 cups or so of sauce. Yes, it tastes and smells delicious but is definetly not worth my time to make it:) If I had bought these tomatoes on sale for .99 per pound(lucky find) then it would be about $7 a jar, not counting the energy costs to boil. These were from my garden and I'm sure probably more than .99 per pound. So I will no longer sigh at the price of spaghetti saunce...I'll just be grateful I didn't have to make it:)

Boys and Toads:)

Derek enjoyed another weekend with Dad. They went to Snowflake for a night and then joined Grandpa Lamb and Uncle Brandon for their ward's Father and Sons camp out. While in Snowflake Derek found a friend...

Unfortunately mom did not get to meet his new friend:( He was going to come and visit, but they decided to let him go in the forest. I'm sure I'll get over the disappointment.

Derek and Dad also enjoyed hunting for night crawlers in Snowflake to provide a delicious treat to our chickens...they did love them:) They camped one night with Grandpa and Brandon and then came home the second night, because there were just too many people and they missed mom:)

Awesome Article - Must Read

Darrell subscribes to a publication from Hillsdale College. I occasionally read it. I read this months' article and was very impressed with the message. It stirred lots of thinking. If you visit http://www.hillsdale.edu/news/imprimis.asp you can read the article. It is titled "Live Free or Die" - just in case it is a new month and you have to search the archives.

Daily happenings

These are just some miscellaneous pictures I had to post for fun because they are cute:)

This is Derek's first time experiencing an air popcorn popper:) He thought it was pretty nifty.

Emily loves putting on Mr. potato head's glasses...isn't she cute:)

Jayden's Birthday at the Zoo

Katie invited me and the kids to the zoo for Jayden's 2nd birthday. The kids had a blast! Derek did not want to go, even though Katie and I were beat and hot! But, it was a very fun day, in fact the most fun at a zoo I have ever had. The only day to go to the zoo is during the week with just a couple other people. It was so relaxing and uncrowded.

Derek's 2 favorite things to do at the zoo are to play in the splash park and at the playground...I thought the fun of a zoo was the animals, but I guess I don't know anything:)

The kids also enjoyed a ride on the merry-go-round. Emily was NOT happy to get off the ride. But she got over it:)

By the time we hit the splash park, Emily was exhausted. She was too scared to go in the water, so she just sat in the shade looking tired.

Derek and Jayden on the other hand, LOVED the splash park. Every time Derek would come out of the slide he would have a huge grin on his face and do a little hop, skip, and a jump routine. I was lucky to catch one on camera without other kids in the way.

Thanks again Katie and Jayden for the wonderful day at the zoo. Katie brought lunch and everything and I thoroughly enjoyed the day. Happy 2nd Birthday Jayden!!

Fathers and Sons Camping Trip

Darrell and Derek went up on a Friday morning for Fathers and Sons. They found a nice creek to play in. Mom and Emily enjoyed a night out with friends and Emily got to sleep with mom. This included falling off mom's bed in the middle of the night...oops:)

Derek sustained a minor tongue injury on Saturday. While climbing a tree he fell and bit his tongue. Luckily it didn't need stitches, but it was a pretty good cut. He almost teared up showing it to me.

Darrell said Derek was a very good boy and had a blast. Darrell actually wanted to play with him more, but he was so busy running and exploring that he did not have time for Dad:( Darrell enjoyed talking to a few of the men his age, although he was ready to come home by the next day. Derek loved breakfast on Saturday morning, which included eggs, sausage, bacon, and pancakes:)

Eggs and Hamburger

This was my first attempt at canning hamburger. I've never even tasted canned hamburger, I've just heard people do. So I'll be interested to see how it tastes in spaghetti or something like that:)

This is a picture of 1 1/2 dozen eggs all at one time. It's been fun getting eggs from our chickens, although I now have to guess at how many eggs to use when a recipe calls for so many "large" eggs, becaue the size of our eggs varies so much (as seen in the picture below). I wish you could really appreciate how small the small one is and how big the big one is. The picture just doesn't do it justice.

Beginning to discover my mission...

The following is a something I posted at http://tjedonline.ning.com (a TJEd group I belong to online). I decided to also post it on my blog for any who might be intersted. It is a little long winded:) Alot of the phrasing I use might be foreign if you don't know much about TJEd. Feel free to ask me or visit http://www.tjed.org or http://www.tjedonline.com/ or read the book for more details:) It is a life changing book!:)

I just had to share what is brewing and bubbling inside of me. When I discovered TJEd not even a year ago, it was during my constant research and pursuit of how to homeschool my children. My children are only 1 & 4 but I had decided to homeschool before they were born and began my investigations before they were born. After reading TJEd I knew I had found my foundation for the homeschooling of my children...little did I know how much it would change ALL aspects of my life and not just how I would homeschool my children.

Since last June when I first read TJEd I have been on fire! The intensity waxes and wanes with the daily happenings of life, but has been on a steady up hill slope. I have read so many books, have thought so many new thoughts, have found answers to so many questions related to everything in my life. I have seen the possibilities open before me and the confidence to pursue them is increasing. As many of us are pioneers because we did not have a true scholar phase during our adolescent/young adult years we are pursuing not only scholar & depth phase but trying to pursue our mission phase at the same time. Some of us have also had to start from the beginning with core and love of learning. I felt I had a good core but did have to have a love of learning phase. Right now I feel as if I'm in that transition stage to scholar while at the same time sky rocketing into a mission phase (this very recent:)

I want to be more specific with what I mean about sky rocketing ito mission phase. In mission phase we build 2 towers...family and organization. Building the family tower seemed obvious to me as I have a family and truly want to build a strong one, but I bucked at the organization tower for a while. My concept of building an "organization" was one that included starting this business that eventually was huge and the only people I have actually seen pursuing a mission phase were those at TJEd conventions who are advocating in areas surrounding TJEd. My concept has changed and I have discovered my path, that my mission doesn't mean putting all of me into promoting TJEd principles. This is a completely wonderful mission for others and I am so grateful that people are doing it because it is important, but that is not what is in store for me. I have had times even before discovering TJEd that I would touch on this path briefly and then brush it away. The times that I touch this path have increased and slowly my ideas have been molded into something that is almost tangible to me...although still it feels light years away also.

By profession I am a registered nurse. I practiced in a hospital for 4 years on a heart/stroke unit before resigning after my second child was born. It was a difficult transition for me because I identified myself a lot by my profession and liked being a nurse. Of course I loved being a mom too but still wanted that artificial aura of importance connected with having a profession. I took me time but I finally arrived at a point where I thought I could set my license aside forever and never look back. That has waxed and waned also:) Sometimes I feel like I will never practice as a nurse again and other times I feel like I will. One thing I know for certain is I have little to no desire to return to hospital nursing. One of the things that frustrated me the most was educating patients. I truly believe the best way to approach health care is through prevention with education, life style changes, and health promotion. We live in a very unhealthy society that is getting worse. I love educating patients and seeing the light bulbs turn on, but that is rare in a hospital setting. Patients in a hospital are not in the best position to receive any education, let alone retain it. Plus once they leave my care that's the last time I see them. I have felt if I did return to nursing it would be in an out of hospital setting that allowed me to work with patients to educate them about their disease and help them set and reach goals to improve their own lives. I have mulled this over in my mind several times, each time fine tuning, but feel I've finally struck gold.

While continuing to study the principles of TJEd I realized they could apply to a person trying to make significant lifestyle changes in regards to health. I began to see that I could become a mentor to people struggling to make those lifestyle changes they desperately need to improve their quality of life and extend their lives by regaining their health. I could use the 7 keys and 5 environments and apply them uniquely to helping patients attain their goals. This is still a very new development in my thoughts and nothing is fully developed as far as how I will go about it, I only know that it feels right and I am completely inspired and excited. It may be years before all my ideas and things develop into a tangible organization but I'm excited and have a direction. My husband is finishing his second year in medical school and in five years after the remainder of medical school and residency we plan to re locate to his hometown. He loves his hometown and I have developed a love for the town since marrying him. Both of us want to make an impact on the health of the people in that town by inspiring them to help themselves, instilling hope in them that they CAN change their lifestyles and gain control over many of their health problems. We are looking forward to working together on this each of us in our unique rolls of doctor and nurse.
Well I rambled more than I intended but I am just brimming with excitement and had to share. This was the best place I felt I could share because discovering TJEd is what ignited the fire and opened the possibilities before me.
