Each summer Darrell's residency program has a welcome picnic for the new interns. The kids took a break from being inside and went to walk around in the rock maze.

Emily + Sarah + Scissors =
On Friday I went downstairs to check on Sarah. When I went in the room she started shouting and crying wanting me to get out and go away. Of course that makes me suspicious. I thought maybe she had pooped her underwear again or something. I couldn't find anything out of sorts and so went on with the day. That night Darrell and I went out to dinner with James and Becky. When we came home we were told Sarah had cut her hair!! I checked my camera, because earlier in the day I had taken a picture of Sarah at the Taylor Dam. Well I could see she had cut her hair in that picture but you couldn't tell unless you knew what you were looking for. Notice - no hair at her shoulders on right side.
When we woke up in the morning we saw the results. She must have taken the scissors to her hair a second time since nobody noticed the first time. She had totally butchered it. Grandma finished the job to make it look even (sort of...some parts Sarah and Emily cut REALLY short)Then we find out Emily cut her hair too - luckily not as bad as Sarah's. Then it gets even better...Emily admits she helped cut Sarah's hair. Ahhhhhhh!!!!! I am so sad...I miss Sarah's little curls. I know it is just hair and it will grow back, but it still makes me sad. She will have to wear a headband when we go out of the house just so she looks more like a girl. Emily's hair we are just leaving as is. When I put her hair in a ponytail you can't tell, and she really likes her hair long.

Family Outing near Taylor Dam
While in Snowflake we visited the Taylor Dam. We spent a couple hours there and the kids had a blast. Unfortunately we didn't anticipate the water being nice enough to play in, so despite my efforts to keep them dry we took home wet clothes:)
In the above pictures, Derek is trying to ride this log. He kept calling it is canoe.
Sarah can rarely smile for a picture...she always
has to "pose" in some silly fashion.
I had to show all of them because it
was hilarious how her expression kept
changing for each picture.
Animals of the week
Derek has had a blast finding lots of insects and animals while here in Snowflake. Below are the latest additions:

Family Learning
Scriptures - This week I added our memory work during scripture time and that worked much better.
Reading Time - We continued reading The Hobbit, family history, Beowulf and a storybook each day.
Science - We learned about fresh water habitats. We discussed about the different plants and animals that live near fresh water. We discussed the different types of fresh water habitats such as rivers, streams, lakes, and swamps. We went on several different outings this week to different bodies of water. We sent to Silver Creek, a trail in Show Low near a river, a pond, and another area of Silver Creek.
History/Geography - We learned about Columbus. We colored pictures of the ships sailed by Columbus and his group. We continued to review the continents and oceans of the world. We also talked about the different types of houses that Indians lived in.
Music - We are studying Chopin
Individual Learning
Derek - Math: Continued reading Life of Fred, we are now in the Cats volume. We learned about rounding and different types of measurements. He worked on math facts and we focused heavily on the addition math facts of 7. He had another spelling test this week which he did much better on.
Emily - Emily finished her alphabet flashcard chart and so went on a special outing with Darrell. We are working more on identifying numbers, and she continued to work on her letter writing.
Pictures at Silver Creek near the fish hatchery. There is a little shallow spot with rocks the kids like to play in. The girls ended up in just shirts because they got their skirts and underwear wet. The had tons of fun playing in the water.
I didn't get many pictures on this outing. We went to a little preserve on the way to Show low. It was pretty and so quiet. The kids didn't like this trip as much because there was nowhere to really get in the water.

to find crawdads without much success.
He found a couple dead ones and
a few babies.
With the increase in rain around the area,
the vegetation has gotten very green.
I just loved all the green and the contrasting colors
of wildflowers scattered throughout the grass.
I'm amazed sometimes about kid's tolerance for
heat and cold. Here Sarah is relaxing with
her feet in the water. I thought it looked nice
and relaxing so I put my feet in...WOW...it was
cold. My feet would ache if I left them in for
more than 2 seconds.
A lot of mint grows in this area. Emily
loves mint and had fun picking
and smelling it.
