Books I Have Read

I have been keeping a hand written record of the books I have read since the end of 2008 and decided I wanted to post them and continue to post the ones I read in the future.  This is mostly for me, but if anyone gets a recommendation for a good read from it then that is great.

Unschooling Rules - (Clark Aldrich) Hits home with many of the beliefs I have about education.  Very easy read.
Les Miserables - This is a VERY long book and I was so proud of myself for finally finishing it.  It probably took over a year but it was worth it.  There were a lot of wordy parts that were hard to understand that I skimmed, but for the most part I read the whole thing.  It was great!
Harry Potter (all books) (by J.K. Rowling)
Emma (by Jane Eyre)
Far From the Madding Crowd (by Thomas Hardy) I read this a year ago and can't really remember if I liked it or not, I can barely remember what it was about:)
How a Man Thinketh (by James Allen) - This is a quick but profound read.  This book is in public domain and can be found free online.  It really makes  you think and is about how our thoughts for good or bad determine our actions and how we can choose to change those thoughts and thus our actions.  Great book.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (by Mark Twain)
A Wrinkle in Time (by Madelene Llengle)
A Mind at a Time (by Mel Levine)
Uncle Tom's Cabin (by Harriet Beecher Stowe)
The Knowledge Deficit (by E.D. Hirsch, Jr.)
A Thomas Jefferson Education (by Oliver DeMille) A book about education and this author's philosophy.  I agree heartily with many of his ideas.
A Philosophy of Education (by Charlotte Mason) When going through the possibility of homeschooling my children, an option still a possibility in the future, I read as much as I could about education.  Charlotte Mason was a teacher over 100 years ago, but many of her ideas are fascinating and applicable today.  Again her books are public domain.
The Way they Learn (by Cynthia Ulrich Tobias)
Lectures on Faith (by Joseph Smith)
Coming Home to Eat: The Pleasure and Politics of Local Food (by Gary Paul Nabhan)
Children's Play: The Roots of Reading (by Zigler, Singer, Joef)
Formation of Character (by Charlotte Mason)
The Secret Garden (by Frances Hodgson Burnett)
The Taming of the Shrew (by Shakespeare)
Red Land, Black Land (by Barbara Mertz)
School Education (by Charlotte Mason)
Little Women (by Louis May Alcott)
Punished by Rewards (Alfie Kohn)
The Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett)
Last Child in the Woods (by Richard Louv) This book discusses how children have lost a lot of value in being outdoors and society as a whole does not grasp the implications of this.  Very good book and thought provoking.
Parents and Children (Charlotte Mason)
The One Minute Mother (Spencer Johnson) This is one I need to read again.
The Walking Drum (Louis L'amour)
The Chosen (Randall White)
The One Minute Manager (Kenneth Blanchard and Spender Johnson)
Home Education (Charlotte Mason)
Gulliver's Travels (Jonathan Swift)
Miseducation: Preschoolers at Risk (David Elkind)
The Choice (The Arbinger Institute)
The Well-Trained Mind (Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer)
A Thomas Jefferson Education Home Companion (multiple)
The Abolition of Man (C.S. Lewis)
Little Britches (Ralph Moody)
Anthem (Ayn Rand)

Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)
Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte)
Alas, Babylon (Pat Franks
